How the counts work
| Metric | Method |
|---|---|
| Words | Your browser’s Unicode word segmentation (Intl.Segmenter), so Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Hindi are counted sensibly; falls back to letter/number runs. |
| Characters | Every character including spaces and line breaks; emoji count as one. |
| Sentences | Text ending in . ! ? (and full-width 。!?), plus a final unfinished sentence. |
| Paragraphs | Blocks separated by a blank line. |
| Reading time | Words ÷ 238 words per minute (adjustable), a common average for adult silent reading. |
| Speaking time | Words ÷ 150 words per minute, a typical presentation pace. |
Common word-count targets
| Text | Typical length |
|---|---|
| Tweet / X post | 280 characters |
| Meta description | ~150–160 characters |
| College application essay | often 250–650 words |
| Blog post | 800–2,000 words |
| 1 page, single-spaced | ~500 words |
Always check the exact limit set by your school, publisher or platform.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
With your browser’s Unicode word segmentation, so languages without spaces (Chinese, Japanese) and punctuation are handled sensibly.
Do characters include spaces?
The tool shows both: characters including spaces and line breaks, and characters without spaces.
How is reading time calculated?
Word count divided by 238 words per minute by default (you can change it). Speaking time uses 150 words per minute.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. Counting happens in your browser. A draft is saved only in this browser’s local storage so a refresh doesn’t lose it; Clear removes it.
