PdfCraft: Free Open-Source PDF Workbench (ArtCraft)
PdfCraft is ArtCraft’s free, open-source PDF workbench — a clean-room, Rust-native reimplementation of an Adobe Acrobat–style app for reading, organizing, combining, splitting and securing PDFs. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and in the browser (WebAssembly). Latest GitHub release as of October 12, 2026 is v0.7.1; the product page still listed 0.6.0 when we checked, so prefer the GitHub Releases page or the official ArtCraft download for the newest build. It is early alpha — useful for everyday PDF tasks, not a drop-in Acrobat Pro replacement yet. Download only from getartcraft.com/apps/pdfcraft or official GitHub releases.

How to download PdfCraft (official only)
Avoid random “PdfCraft.exe” or mirror sites. Safe paths:
- Open the official PdfCraft page.
- Prefer ArtCraft Launcher (installs PdfCraft with the other Crafting Apps and handles updates), or take a standalone installer for your OS.
- For the newest numbered build, also check GitHub Releases for storytold/pdfcraft and verify files with the published SHA256SUMS.txt when provided.
- Optional: build from source with a recent Rust toolchain (
git clone→cargo run --release -p pdfcraft). The product page documents the Rust version it expects.
| System | Typical official options |
|---|---|
| Windows | 64-bit installer (+ other standalone builds on the product / Releases pages) |
| macOS | Universal disk image (Apple silicon + Intel) |
| Linux | Flatpak, AppImage, .deb, .rpm, tarball (x86_64 / ARM64; some Releases also list RISC-V) |
| FreeBSD | Plain x86_64 tarball on Releases |
| Web | pdfcraft-web-*.zip WebAssembly static site to host yourself |
| Checksums | SHA256SUMS.txt next to release assets |
What’s inside (from the official feature list)
- Faithful rendering — including world scripts, vertical Japanese, color emoji and transparency (team cites a large crash-free test corpus).
- Search as you type with text selection that follows reading order.
- Organize pages like cards — rotate, delete, insert, reorder, with deep undo.
- Combine, extract, split while aiming to keep links, form fields, layers and bookmarks.
- Incremental / atomic saves with autosave and crash recovery.
- Built-in security — opens RC4 through AES-256 encryption and honors author permissions.
Exact tool coverage moves quickly in alpha; treat any third-party “90+ tools” claims as marketing unless you verify them in the build you installed.
PdfCraft vs Adobe Acrobat (honest table)
| PdfCraft | Adobe Acrobat | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, open source | Paid (Reader free; Pro / Standard subscription or license) |
| Maturity | Early alpha (first public window late Sep–Oct 2026) | Decades of releases |
| Platforms | macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, browser | Strong on Windows/macOS; Linux is not a first-class Acrobat desktop |
| Cloud / account | Local-first; no account required for the app | Adobe account / Document Cloud features |
| Production use | Not yet — expect alpha bugs and gaps | Industry standard for forms, certs, enterprise PDF |
Bottom line: try PdfCraft for personal PDFs, organizing pages, and learning a free local tool. Keep Acrobat (or another mature PDF suite) for client work, certified workflows and anything that must not fail.
PrintCraft → PdfCraft
If you still see PrintCraft in older posts or bookmarks, that was this project’s earlier name. The GitHub org and ArtCraft site now ship it as PdfCraft; use the current official URLs above.
