EffectCraft: The Free, Open-Source After Effects Alternative
EffectCraft is a free, open-source motion-graphics and compositing app from the ArtCraft team — a clean-room rebuild of Adobe After Effects written in Rust. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and in a browser. Version 0.8.0 came out on October 11, 2026; it is alpha software (first commit October 1, 2026), so it can’t open .aep projects or run After Effects plug-ins yet. Download it only from the official ArtCraft page or the project’s GitHub releases.

How to download EffectCraft
- Open the official EffectCraft page on getartcraft.com.
- Choose ArtCraft Launcher (installs every Crafting App and keeps them updated) or the standalone EffectCraft installer for your system.
- Pick your file:
| System | Recommended download | Other formats |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | 64-bit .msi installer (code-signed) |
Portable .zip; ARM64 and 32-bit builds |
| macOS | Universal .dmg (signed and notarized) |
Command-line tool .zip |
| Linux | Flatpak (flatpak install --user <file>) |
AppImage, .deb, .rpm, .tar.gz; ARM64 builds; RISC-V tarball |

Prefer to build it yourself? You need Rust 1.95 or newer: clone the repository and run cargo run --release -p effectcraft (add -- --demo to open the demo project).
What EffectCraft can do
- Compositions and layers: solids, shapes, text, footage, nested compositions, nulls, adjustment layers, cameras and lights; parenting, track mattes, 38 blend modes and motion blur.
- Keyframes like After Effects: linear, Bezier, hold, auto and roving keys, Easy Ease (F9) and a Graph Editor with value and speed graphs.
- About 300 effects: the project README counts 306, including every built-in After Effects effect — blur, color correction (Curves, Levels, Lumetri Color), distortion, Fractal Noise, keying, particles (CC Particle World), Shatter, Glow, Timewarp and more — plus all nine layer styles.
- Real 3D: 3D layers, one- and two-node cameras with depth of field, and lights that cast soft ray-traced shadows.
- Expressions: JavaScript with
wiggle, loopOutand layer references, with an inline editor and pick-whip. - Shapes, masks, text and puppet pins: trim paths, repeaters, pen-tool masks with feather, text animators, and Puppet pins for rigging.
- Export: H.264 MP4, ProRes MOV (with alpha), HEVC, AV1, WebM, PNG/JPEG/TIFF/EXR sequences, GIF and WAV/AIFF from a Render Queue — with no FFmpeg inside — plus Lottie JSON import and export for web and app animations.
- Automation: a command-line renderer, a JSON control channel and an MCP server, so scripts and AI agents can drive every command.
EffectCraft vs After Effects
| EffectCraft 0.8 | Adobe After Effects | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, open source | Paid subscription |
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, browser | Windows, macOS |
Opens .aep / .aepx projects |
No | Yes |
| Third-party AE plug-ins (Trapcode, Element, Saber…) | No — it has its own WebAssembly plug-in API | Yes |
| Lottie export | Built in | Through third-party extensions |
| Maturity | Alpha (since October 2026) | Industry standard |
Bottom line: EffectCraft is worth trying for new personal projects, Lottie animations and learning motion graphics for free. Keep After Effects for client work, existing .aep projects and anything that depends on plug-ins.
Keyboard shortcuts carried over from After Effects
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|

| Shift + property key | Add that property to the ones already shown |
| Alt + Shift + A/P/S/R/T | Set a keyframe for that property at the current time |
| F9 | Easy Ease the selected keyframes |

Known limitations (October 2026)
- No
.aep/.aepximport — rebuild existing projects or start new ones. - After Effects plug-ins don’t run.
- Results can differ from After Effects in places; renders aren’t automatically compared yet.
- macOS is the most tested platform; Windows and Linux users have reported basic interaction bugs that are being fixed first.
- Linux (native Wayland): drag-and-drop of files may not work — use File ▸ Import ▸ File… instead.
- Roto Brush and face tracking use optional downloadable AI models that haven’t been compared with After Effects yet.

Frequently asked questions
Is EffectCraft free?
Yes. EffectCraft is free and open source (MIT or Apache-2.0), with no subscription, no telemetry and no network access unless you ask for it.
Can EffectCraft open After Effects projects?
Not yet. It saves its own .ecproj files and cannot open .aep or .aepx files, and After Effects plug-ins don’t run in it.
Where do I download EffectCraft safely?
From the official EffectCraft page on getartcraft.com (Launcher or standalone installers) or the Releases page of the storytold/effectcraft GitHub repository. Avoid third-party mirrors — the alpha changes every few days.
Is EffectCraft made by Adobe?
No. It is an independent ArtCraft project that copies After Effects’ workflow from public documentation and behaviour, not Adobe’s code or files.
